If you set the Griffith Park Bellarmine course record 22 years ago, do you stop running? No, if you’re Richard Erbes, you still get out of bed at 6:00 a.m. and run 15 miles. If you set the course record for girls eight years ago, you awake at 5:00 a.m. and run 19 miles. That’s what Natalie Stein does. She’s pointing for the Detroit Marathon on October 19, with the aim of lowering her 2:52 PR. If it’s wintertime at Michigan State University and it snows overnight, Natalie tries to avoid the icy patches. Then she heads into the academic world and pursuit of a Ph.D. in nutrition. Since last year, she changed her thesis to the effects of gastric bypass surgery on hunger. For Richard, it’s a day full of family and software engineering. With wife Stella they have two sons, Joshua, 12, and Jacob, 8, and their many activities. Stella teaches at Pepperdine and had a book published in December 2007, “What Teachers Should Know but Textbooks Don’t Show.” Richard competes in trail races and half marathons. The family lives in Ventura County. |
