I grew up playing in this park and it remains my favorite place to take family, friends and the many visitors to our city. Like Griffith J. Griffith, I believe that Griffith Park ‘must be made a place of rest and relaxation for that masses, a resort for the rank and file, for the plain people’ and that we promote and celebrate this uniqueness-a park for the people. In my desire to share my love of this place, I wanted to produce a map highlighting the park’s many features so that you can learn more about the places to visit and explore. Griffith Park is a place to love-so enjoy yourselves today!” |

A Sport of Contrasts
Is cross country a sport of “no guts, no glory”; or does it live just “by the numbers”? Certainly no other sport uses numbers to gauge performance any more assiduously than cross country. There’s the exhilarating PR for the individual runner. There’s the pragmatic coach comparing today’s time with previous outings to assess improvement. But there’s also the runner’s burning lungs and leaden legs, especially on a rugged hill course like Griffith Park Bellarmine. And during the off-season there are the miles and hours of building a base. Meet Director Jim Couch set out to capture all these benchmarks of cross country. In the program available for sale at the Invitational, there are pages and pages of the meet’s 35-year numerical history, prior to 2009. On the event’s web site, www.bell-jeff.net click on X-C Invitation, the same times and results appear. The web site also offers videos of selected races over the years. |

Saucony Steps Forward
The Bellarmine Griffith Park Invitational welcomes Saucony as its major shoe sponsor for the 2009 meet. Boy and girl fastest times of the day will receive a goody bag from the company. Saucony will also assist the meet with banners, fencing and course markers. “We welcome Saucony and its century-long tradition of quality running shoes and athletic gear,” said meet director Jim Couch. “They and our other sponsors will help make the 36th annual Bellarmine Invitational a memorable event for our student athletes.” |
