41st ANNIVERSARY OF BELLARMINE-JEFFERSON CROSS-COUNTRY INVITATIONAL
GRIFFITH PARK, CALIFORNIA, SEPTEMBER 27, 2014—Providing the opportunity for high schools across the Southland to compete on a challenging but exciting course in beautiful Griffith Park has been the goal of the annual Bellarmine-Jefferson Cross-Country Invitational since its inception in 1973. Now in its 41st year, the invitational—to be held on Saturday, September 27—holds the record for the longest running single event taking place in the historic park. The first race begins at 7 a.m. and the meet continues until 2 p.m.
How has one event had such a long and distinguished history? Just ask the event founder and organizer, Jim Couch, who is also a teacher and cross-country coach at Bellarmine-Jefferson High School. “One of the major reasons I started the Bellarmine-Jefferson Cross-Country Invitational was to give small schools like ours a chance to compete as well as meet the needs of local coaches by providing a quality race on a challenging course,” Couch said. “Since its beginning, this meet has blossomed into one of the finest in Southern California.”
Competitors come from high schools all across California. The race takes place in Griffith Park north of the Greek Theatre and includes 3 miles of hills on dirt and grassy surfaces. Approximately 4,000 male and female high school runners in 17 races compete in the meet. More information can be found at www.bell-jeff.org.
Not a high-school student but have a passion for running? Any runner from the community can also get in on the action during the 4th Annual 5k Open Race. Runners of any age who are not connected to a high school team may compete as an individual or as part of a team. This race begins at 7 a.m. and registration information can be found at bell-jeffopendivision.com.
As an added bonus, all runners will get the opportunity to meet American runner, Duane Solomon, beginning at 9 a.m. The Bellarmine-Jefferson Invitational is happy to welcome back Solomon, who also attended in 2012. Solomon beat his person best 800 meter time of 1:42.82 at the 2012 Olympics to place fourth in the men’s 800 meter final. This is the second fastest time in U.S. history, placing him just behind his coach, Johnny Grey. He also captured the USA Outdoor Championship gold in the 800 meter in 2013. Solomon is a California native, grew up in Lompoc and graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in sociology, where he claimed the NACAC under-23 title in the 800 meter when he was just a sophomore.

Bellarmine Open 5K Registration
Tom LaBonge L. A. City Council Welcome to Griffith Park, the greatest urban park in the United States! I grew up playing in this park and it remains my favorite place to take family, friends and the many visitors to our city. Like Griffith J. Griffith, I believe that Griffith Park ‘must be made a place of rest and relaxation for that masses, a resort for the rank and file, for the plain people’ and that we promote and celebrate this uniqueness-a park for the people. In my desire to share my love of this place, I wanted to produce a map highlighting the park’s many features so that you can learn more about the places to visit and explore. This map is now available at the Ranger Station for you to explore. Griffith Park is a place to love-so enjoy yourselves today!” Open 5k Run
